DIFFERENCES IN THE USE OF INTERNET BETWEEN ELDER PEOPLE AND YOUNGER IN THE DAILY LIFE. THE CASE OF ANDALUSIA (SPAIN)

The current societies have known a technical and economic change focused on the new technologies of the information. The shift is having deep consequences in the social life, so some sociologists talk about the society of the information.

Our aim is establishing how Internet usage depends on age. Specifically we will pay attention to the usage or non-use of technology of elder people group (over 65 years old) and younger ones in their daily lives. We will focus our research in Andalusia — a region in southern Spain.

We use the Social Andalusian Survey (part of the European Social Survey) provided by the Foundation Center of Andalusian Studies.

The work hypothesis is based on the existence of a digital divide for the new technologies access. Assuming the digital divide model, we will prove that younger Andalusian people´s technological inmersion in everyday conxtext, is deeper than elder people. Therefore we will demonstrate the existence of an unequal usage in the Internet access is according to ageing groups and collectives.

From the methodological point of view, in order to reach our goals, we will make use of the analysis of segmentation and also categorical data analysis. Hereby we will obtain profiles and typologies of polled ones who make either more or less usage of Internet through ageing groups. So it will let it know the social categories and features to be defined them.
